About Me

Cycling has been a huge part of my life, I have always been around racing, from a small boy following my Olympic Cyclist dad to track cycling meets, up to current day where I have mentored and guided young cyclists through to their professional careers.

I started racing bicyles at age 14. At the age of 17 I was selected to be part of the Barcelona Track team, I went on the represent Australia in multiple world road cycling championships and two Olympic Games. I won a Commonwealth Games Gold medal in the 100k team time trial, and then moved into the Professional cycling circuit for 14 years from 1995- 2008.

I completed six Grand Tours, two Tour De France’s, two Giro D ‘Italia’s and two Vuelta Espania’s.

I won the Australian Pro Road Championships in 1999, and the Australian Criterium Championship in 1994.

I split my career between racing the hardest races in Europe like Paris Roubaix and the Tour of Flanders to spending many years racing the American circuit and competing and winning the US Pro Road Title in Philadelphia and the US Criterium Title in Downers Grove in Chicago.

I retired in 2008 and went straight to the Director Sportif’s seat in the race car of the Fly V Australia racing team. I ran teams Like Rusvelo, Drapac Pro Cycling, JML team and have spent the last 6 years mentoring the best young talent to come out of Australia with ARA Skip Capital Racing team on the Sunshine Coast of Australia.

As far as my coaching experience is concerned, I was very lucky to have one of the world’s best coaches take care of me in my career, and his name was Heiko Salzweidel. He was a German coach who would have to be the most successful Olympic and World championship coach in history. He was also the driving force behind the rise of British cycling, and the continued success of Mark Cavendish and the British team pursuit team.

I use a lot of his fool proof training techniques and structures, it has worked well for myself and also for my training clients.

“Henk Vogels is a cycling legend with over 15 years at the highest level. A Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist and two-time Olympian, Henk’s career showcases exceptional skill and resilience.

As the former Sports Director for ARA Skip Capital, Henk’s leadership helped develop young athletes by fostering teamwork and accountability.

Henk’s journey of recovery from a life-threatening crash during the Fitchburg Classic, where he suffered life threatening injuries , highlights his incredible determination. His commitment to cycling and mentorship continues to inspire ”

Having Henk’s guidance and support throughout the years of racing in Europe and Australia has truly been invaluable. During these times Henk has taught myself a great deal, from bike setup to nutrition along with tactics and bike handling skills. Without Henk’s support and guidance I wouldn’t be where I am today and couldn’t ask for a better person to guide me through all the steps of the cycling world.

Henk stepped in at short notice and gave me my bike taper program that helped me win the Ironman World Championship in 2012.
I preferred unstructured training, long hours on the bike, but without any structure my previous bike performances had not been good enough. I asked Henk to help me get sharp, and stay strong, and he did an awesome job obviously. It’s not easy for a coach to step in at short notice and write a plan like Henk did, and it worked perfectly. The plan was based on perceived efforts and heart rate, was super clear and simple. I was 2nd off the bike instead of 12th, with much less work to do on the run to get the win. Of course the confidence he instilled in me made a big difference too, as his words are as valuable as the numbers he writes.
